A beautiful imitation with a very attractive chocolate brown patina
Lot 4526
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.78 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, irregular mint, after 324. CONSTA-IIVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS / STR(crescent) Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 461-4 (for prototype). A beautiful coin with a very attractive chocolate brown patina. Extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink & Son on 2 Sepember 1999.

This mule combines an obverse for Constantine I with a reverse for the Caesars. The style of the portrait is clearly unofficial, which, together with the blundered obverse legend, indicates that this coin is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation.
